Bodegas Mocen
D.O. Rueda, Spain
In the heart of Rueda lies the abandoned medieval cellars where wine used to age in the times of Catholic Kings and the discovery of America where Bodegas Mocen set down its roots.
In 1988, Jose Luis purchased 140 hectares of prime vineyard land in the D.O. Rueda and restored it to create the vineyard. After 36 years, Mr. Luis is ready to introduce the American Market to the high quality wines of Bodegas Mocen.
The vineyard in itself is located between 740-760 meters above sea level which attributes to the good acidity in the wine. The average vine age is over 30 years old while helps provide depth and structure. They have chosen to plant the vines close together, sitting 1.5 x 3 meters apart, to increase the intensity of the flavors. The land itself is a mixture of silt and sand with loose pebbles that allows the plants to drive deep roots which aid in the minerality.
The theme of tradition with a splash of innovation comes to light when speaking about the varieties utilized in this vineyard. 47% Verdejo, 13% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Viura, 24% Tempranillo, 8% Cabernet, and 1% Merlot.
Extreme caution is employed at the winery to bring the harvest to the cellar door in the optimum condition. Night Harvesting and no crushed fruit is used in the Mocen line of production.
Our Winemakers
Jose Andres Notario
Jose Andres Notario has been the winemaker of Bodegas Mocen for over 18 years. He is a member of the tasting panel of the Consul of Regulation of D.O. Rueda. Innovative, passionate and hard-working, you can find him either swirling a glass behind a vat or running a marathon in his free time.
He believes this area is brilliant for the types of wines they create. The Rueda is a predominantly white-wine region is Castilla y Leon, located northwest of the Spanish capital, Madrid. The soils are magnesium and calcium rich, porous, well ventilated, and drain well. Sandy and loamy soil types are common here. Hot, hard summers, and cold, often below freezing winters are characteristic of this continental climate. As a benefit, these dry summer days are followed by crisp, cool nights that help to foster balanced, refreshing acidity in the grapes.
